5 Slice of Life Comedy K-Dramas You Need When You Miss Your Best Friends

1. Hospital Playlist

This drama revolves around five doctors who’ve been best friends since med school. The group includes four guys—Lee Ik-jun, a hilarious single dad; Ahn Jeong-won, a kind pediatric surgeon with dreams of becoming a priest; Kim Jun-wan, a blunt but caring cardiothoracic surgeon; and Yang Seok-hyung, a quiet yet devoted OBGYN. The group wouldn’t be complete without Chae Song-hwa, a talented and dependable neurosurgeon who’s the glue that holds them together.

Even with their busy schedules and demanding jobs, they always make time for each other. Their meetups often revolve around their shared passion: playing in a band! Whether it’s Ik-jun’s playful antics or Song-hwa’s hilariously off-key singing, their jam sessions are a highlight. Fun fact: the songs they perform were released on music platforms and became fan favorites!

The show masterfully balances comedy, heartfelt moments, and relatable life challenges. It dives into their personal lives, touching on themes like love, family struggles, and the ups and downs of their careers. On top of that, the hospital setting brings detailed and emotional doctor-patient stories that feel incredibly real.

With its lovable characters, witty humor, and touching storytelling, Hospital Playlist is more than a medical drama—it’s a celebration of friendship, resilience, and the little joys that make life meaningful. It’s the kind of show that will have you laughing one moment and tearing up the next, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll.

2. Be Melodramatic

This drama is about the friendship of three women in their 30s: Lim Jin-joo, Lee Eun-jung, and Hwang Han-joo. Just like Hospital Playlist, they’ve been best friends since college and have stuck together through life’s ups and downs. The story feels super relatable, touching on real-life struggles like happiness, failures, and those unexpected (and unavoidable) moments life throws at you.

The drama revolves around love stories, family dynamics, friendships, and work. And let me tell you, it’s an emotional ride. You’ll definitely shed a tear or two because the storytelling is so heartfelt, and the cast does such an amazing job bringing their characters to life.

But don’t let the title fool you, this show isn’t all about tears. In fact, there are plenty of hilarious scenes that will have you laughing out loud. The balance between touching moments and lighthearted comedy makes it so enjoyable. You won’t get bored watching this one! Be Melodramatic has just one season with 16 episodes, perfect for binge-watching.

3. Twinkling Watermelon

This drama has a unique twist. It’s about time travel! Ha Eun-gyeol, a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), dreams of joining a band, but his father strongly opposes the idea. One day, out of nowhere, Eun-gyeol travels back in time to 1995, when his parents were still in high school. There, he meets his younger dad, mom, and a mysterious girl named Choi Se-kyung, who’s known as the “Cello Goddess” at school.

The story keeps you hooked with so many intriguing moments, especially since Eun-gyeol is navigating a world where he doesn’t even exist yet! Through this time-travel journey, we get to see the fun and free-spirited friendship between Ha Eun-gyeol, Ha Yi-chan, Choi Se-kyung, Cheong-ah, and their bandmates. It’s classic high school vibes, they’re all about exploring life, trying new things, and just having fun.

But this drama isn’t just about laughs (though there are plenty of funny and goofy moments). It dives deep into emotional territory, balancing heartfelt family connections, meaningful friendships, and valuable life lessons. Expect to laugh out loud one minute and tear up the next. Twinkling Watermelon has 16 episodes and is packed with heartwarming moments and a strong dose of nostalgia.

4. Thirty-Nine

Just like Be Melodramatic, this drama follows the lives of three women who are best friends. As the title suggests, they’re at the tail end of their 30s, about to hit 40. Cha Mi-joo, a dermatologist with her own clinic in Gangnam, shares her life with her two close friends, Jung Chan-young and Jang Joo-hee. Their friendship began back in high school thanks to an unexpected event, and they’ve stayed inseparable ever since. Each of them works in a completely different field: Mi-joo is a dermatologist, Chan-young is an acting coach who once dreamed of becoming an actress, and Joo-hee is a cosmetics company manager.

What’s unique about this drama is that right from the first episode, viewers get a glimpse of how the story will end. But don’t worry, even with the ending hinted at, the journey through all 12 episodes is anything but boring. The core theme? A topic that often crosses our minds: death. But it’s not just about facing death, it’s also about the emotions and challenges of being the ones left behind. The director, Kim Sang-ho, described the show perfectly: “I want this to be a drama about the true meaning of life, told through three friends living their fullest while facing the death of a loved one.”

With that in mind, get ready for an emotional ride. There will definitely be tears, but it’s not all sadness! The natural and hilarious moments in their friendship bring balance to the heaviness of the story. Plus, you’ll also get to see how each of them deals with love, family, and work in their own way.

5. Twenty-Five Twenty-One

This drama takes us back to 1998, during South Korea’s IMF financial crisis. Baek Yi-jin, the eldest son of a family hit hard by the economic downturn, has to live independently, juggling various part-time jobs to make ends meet. Through an unexpected turn of events, he meets Na Hee-do, an 18-year-old high school fencing athlete.

Due to the financial crisis, Hee-do’s school shuts down its fencing team, forcing her to convince her mom to let her transfer to a school that still has one. That’s where she meets her soon-to-be lifelong friends: Baek Yi-jin, Moon Ji-ung, Ko Yu-rim, and Ji Seung-wan. Their friendship doesn’t come easy at first, but over time, they become inseparable, navigating life together.

The drama beautifully portrays the ups and downs of their lives, especially their family struggles. Each character has their own battles, but their friendship helps ease the burden. Since they’re young and full of energy, the show is packed with fun, lighthearted moments that’ll have you laughing out loud. And, of course, there’s a sprinkle of romance to keep things interesting!

Twenty-Five Twenty-One became a huge hit during its run, and for good reason. The storytelling is compelling, the characters feel real, and the ending—oh, the ending—is something you have to experience for yourself. If you haven’t watched it yet, now’s the perfect time to see what all the hype was about!
